The groundbreaking for the new site of the Solid Rock Food Closet was held the morning of March 26 on the property of Alleghany Christians Associated for Relief and Emergency Services (CARES) on Womble Street in Sparta.

The building which currently houses the food closet on Macedonia Church Road is up for sale, which prompted the nonprofit organization to look for a new location, explained Food Closet Director DeAnne Warren. Individuals will continue to be served at the Macedonia Church Road location until the Womble Street site is completed, which is anticipated to occur by mid-summer or early fall, according to CARES Director Vickie Scott. The exact timeline is dependent on the amount of donated materials, financial donations, and donated time.

The new food closet will be about 2,700 square feet and will include the food closet itself as well as offices for Red Cross, CARES pharmacy and a meeting room. In the meeting room, demonstrations of how to properly prepare food and nutrition programs are slated to be held.
