Filing for local political office will end on Friday, Feb. 29 at noon
and interest is running high for the March 11 school bond referendum,
according to Alleghany County Board of Elections Director Kate Cosner.
The county has two elections being planned simultaneously, with the
school bond referendum election set for March 11 and a primary
election planned for May 6.
Seats open in the 2008 election include two county commissioner
seats, the register of deeds, two school board seats, the N.C. House
District 90 seat and the N.C. Senate District 30 post.
Turnout for One Stop voting for the March 11 school bond referendum
was under way Tuesday and it has been very heavy, said Cosner. "As of
2:45 on Tuesday, we've had 438 who have voted One Stop," she said.
One Stop voting will continue through Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. The
election will be held on March 11 countywide.
Only those who already are registered to vote may vote on March 11.
However, those not registered may now do so and then immediately vote
One Stop. "We've had 19 people who've come in to register and vote
One Stop," Cosner said. "Interest is really high in the school bond
referendum."
May Primary Filing
As for the May primary, all local races had fielded at least enough
candidates to fill the available seats as of Tuesday evening.
