Former town councilman, Sparta fire chief dies

Former town councilman and Sparta fire chief Clarence John "C.J." Hendrix died Feb. 10 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center at the age of 89.

Hendrix was a charter member of the Sparta-Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department. In those days the Sparta department was the only one in the county. He served with the department for 32 years. Hendrix also served on the Sparta Town Council for 22 years and the Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission Board for 15 years.
