School calendar unveiled

Alleghany County School students will begin the 2008-09 school year on Aug. 6, 2008, with the last day of school tentatively set for May 22, according to the school calendar approved by the members of the Alleghany Board of Education during its Feb. 6 meeting.

Leslie Clark, who serves as the testing coordinator for the schools, addressed the board and made mention of spring break.

"Unlike this year where Easter falls in March, next year, it's going to fall in mid-April. One of the discussions was if you start taking off a whole week that close to end-of-grade testing it's very hard to get the kids settled back down before EOGs (End of Grade testing)." Cox added, "It's also a long time all the way from January to April..." "Without a break," interjected Clark.

With that in mind, it was proposed in the school calendar that spring break be an extended.
