Clarification

A story in the Jan. 31 edition stated that the value of property transferred in the county decreased in 2007. As a point of clarification, in general, individual property prices have not decreased overall, but the number of sales countywide did decrease in 2007.

School calendar unveiled

Alleghany County School students will begin the 2008-09 school year on Aug. 6, 2008, with the last day of school tentatively set for May 22.

Ross is new tobacco prevention coordinator

Jeff Ross, a native of Galax, Va., began his newest job as the tobacco prevention coordinator for Alleghany County Schools in November 2007.

Former town councilman, Sparta fire chief dies

Former town councilman and Sparta fire chief Clarence John "C.J." Hendrix died Feb. 10 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center at the age of 89.
