Ice storm socks county
Sleet and freezing rain left a treacherous coating of ice on Alleghany County and much of the region on Thursday, Jan. 31 and Friday, Feb. 1.
The storm started in the late evening on Thursday. Slick roads were followed by downed trees and limbs and fallen utility lines. Utility and road crews, along with a host of volunteer firefighters, worked through the night and all day Friday to keep roads open and utilities on.
The last of the power outages was restored at 6 p.m. on Saturday, said a report from Blue Ridge Electric. The after-effects of fallen trees and limbs will linger for a while. It will take the Alleghany office of the Department of Transportation two to four more weeks to chip and clear downed trees and limbs, said Bonnie Sapp, transportation supervisor 3.
"We started putting down salt between 10 and 10:30" on Thursday night, Sapp said.
"They spread salt all night off and on and trees started falling around 1:30 or 2.
