Items are being sought for the 41st annual WCOK Heart Fund Auction.
The event, which features donated items sold live over the radio
(1060 AM) in a call-in auction format, will be aired on two
consecutive Saturdays in February: Feb. 16 and Feb. 23. WCOK Station
Manager Andy Wright said the auction will broadcast live each
Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until sign off. Sound from the annual event
also is broadcast live on Alleghany Cablevision Channel 8.
"This has become more than just an auction over the years,"said
Wright. "This event has become 'the people's event' and WCOK
and all the volunteers are just the tools to make it happen."
Items are generally accepted for donation right up until the auction;
however, it is best to donate early, said Virginia Setzer, a long-
time volunteer. She said some people also just need a reminder that
the auction is coming up. Setzer noted, "One girl came in the other
day and she said, 'I'm the one that donated the dog house last
year. I didn't realize it was coming up so soon. I better get to
work on something.'" If people don't start soon, they won't
have time to get their items ready, added Setzer.
"Items will be on display beginning around the first of February,"
said Setzer. The display location is the front window area at Season
Gifts and Home Decor on South Main Street in Sparta, across from
Farmer's Hardware.
Last year's event raised more than $14,000 for the American Heart
Association, said Debbie Williams, treasurer for the Heart Fund.
