Marshall to visit at 6:15 p.m.

A time change was announced for the visit of North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall to Sparta on Jan. 11.

Marshall will be the featured speaker during a public event at the Alleghany Wellness Center at 6:15 p.m.

The visit by Marshall is being organized by the Alleghany County Democrat Party, said Cecil Brooks, who noted that Marshall had appointments the following day in Raleigh and needed to change the time from the earlier announced 7 p.m.

Marshall will be discussing her responsibilities as Secretary of State. She was the first woman ever elected to a statewide executive branch office in North Carolina.

Prior to becoming N.C. Secretary of State, Marshall was a member of the N.C. Senate.

She holds a bachelor's degree in home economics from the University of Maryland and a doctorate in law from Campbell University. She has received honorary doctorates from Lees McRae College and Meredith College.

For more information, contact Brooks at 372-7158.
