Channel 50 is slated to receive $50,000 in grant funds after being
selected as a recipient of a matching state grant through the e-NC
Authority's Capital Expenditure Grant Program.
The channel, available locally for viewing on Alleghany Cablevision
in Sparta, is produced by the A. Anderson Huber Cyber Campus at
Alleghany High School. The channel is a public access channel and
shows programming such as local government meetings, church services
and events.
The grant funds are expected to become available to Channel 50 in the
next three to four months, according to Travis Sturgill, who serves
as the director of the Cyber Campus.
The matching funds for the grant monies will come from the Alleghany
County Commissioners, which offered $15,000, and the Alleghany County
Board of Education, which offered $10,000.
Sturgill learned of grant funds being made available through e-NC
Authority during a meeting of the Channel 50 advisory board when the
topic was broached by County Manager Don Adams. Sturgill noted there
was a short period of time between preparing the grant application
and submitting it.
To get financial backing for the grant match, Sturgill and Channel 50
cameraman and volunteer Charles "Charlie" Scott approached the county
commission. After telling the group about the grant and what it
involved, the board members opted to partially support the local
cable channel through funding should their application be approved.
