Alleghany High School was recently ranked among the top 1,300 high
schools in the country, according to 2008 America's Best High
Schools, a study recently done by U.S. News and World Report in
collaboration with School Evaluation Services. AHS was one of 1,086
high schools to attain a bronze status.
The news magazine examined the 18,000 public high schools in 40
states for the top schools that have attained goals of preparing
students to further their education, work or the military, and
eliminate gaps in achievement separating students of different ethnic
or income groups. The data used for the study were collected during
the 2005-06 school year.
The participating schools went through a three-step analysis. First,
how each school's students performed on state tests was measured;
then the performance of the schools' disadvantaged students was
evaluated; and finally, the schools were looked at to determine
whether or not each was successful in providing college-level
coursework.
Washington, D.C. and ten states were not included in the report.
According to U.S. News and World Report, Washington, D.C., Alabama,
Alaska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming were
not included because their 2005-06 school year state test data was
not made available. Mississippi, Montana and Nebraska were excluded
because the assessment data that was provided was insufficient to
complete the analysis.
The top 1,300 high schools were named among the first ranking of
America's Best High Schools. Of the top 1,300 schools, 100 high
schools in the nation attained a gold medal, 405 received silver
medals and 1,086 attained bronze medals.
U.S. News and World Report opted to do the report in collaboration
with School Evaluation Services—a K-12 data research and analysis
business run by Standard & Poor's—to recognize the high schools in
the country that provide a good education to their entire student
bodies and prepare students for post-secondary opportunities.
