The Razors Edge Skate Park, an Eagle project of Life Scout and high
school freshman Coalbey Murphy with Boy Scout Troop 299, is
anticipated to open in May 2008.
The skate park, to be located in the vacant lot beside Crouse Park at
the intersection of N.C. 18 and Grayson Street—the former location of
the Troutman building—will measure 50x100 feet and serve as a
gathering place for skateboarders, skaters and BMX bikers of all ages
and skill levels.
Phase I of the skate park project is estimated to cost $15,000 and as
of Nov. 13, the project had received $12,550 of the needed funding.
The project is being done in partnership with the Alleghany County
Ministerium and the Town of Sparta. While Coalbey serves as the
project coordinator/financial officer for the project, his Mother
Kathy Murphy serves as the advisor/secretary for the project.
Making mention of the partnership with the Ministerium, Mrs. Murphy
said, "Early on, we decided to partner with the Alleghany Ministerium
in hopes to build a much-needed youth center and form a youth council
in Alleghany County."
She went on to state that the Ministerium serves as a way for
churches to work together on "neutral ground for the betterment of
our community."
Murphy continued, "The reason the Ministerium is partnering with and
serving as the umbrella and governing agency of the Razors Edge Skate
Park Project and taking on the skate ministry is so that any youth
from any faith can be comfortable and be themselves." According to
Murphy, the goal of the project is to provide the children and youth
a safe place to hang out, roller blade, skate or BMX bike in hopes of
"empowering them to be leaders in the future of Alleghany County,
thus the name EDGE (Empowering Developmental Growth Experience).
According to the Murphy's information, youth and adults alike have
been appointed to the skate park's advisory board. The project also
has about 70 supporters.
