WNC Index shows stall in economy
Western North Carolina economic activity, as measured by the Western
North Carolina Economic Index, fell .2 percent in September. The
index, which tracks the level of economic activity in 25 western
North Carolina counties, has not increased for two consecutive
months. The previous month's revised index showed no change.
The WNC economy grew at an annual rate of 2.4 percent in the third
quarter of 2007; below the 3.9 percent reported for the national
economy.
The regional employment picture remained weak in September, and fell
behind the rest of the state. Seasonally adjusted employment for WNC
increased .13 percent for the month, while statewide employment
increased by .70 percent for the month.
