Holiday schedules; parade plans set

Several office closings are scheduled next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

In addition, the annual Sparta Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m.

The parade will begin at Sparta School and proceed along Main Street to Blue Ridge Street.

The theme of this year's parade is "The Fabric of Christmas," and long-time local business owner and volunteer Virginia Setzer is the grand marshal.

Santa Claus will be on the lawn of the Alleghany Courthouse after the parade. "He should arrive shortly after 3 p.m.," said Bob Bamberg, one of the parade's organizers.

Also following the parade, there will be a special concert by the Alleghany High School band on the courthouse lawn. "They will be playing selections of holiday music," said Bamberg.

The community Christmas tree on the courthouse lawn will be lit at dusk, which is around 5:30 p.m. this time of year.

As for the parade, line up will begin at 1 p.m.

"I would encourage everyone to be there before 1:30," said Bamberg. "It's not required, but it is encouraged," he added. "It really helps give us a better idea of how we're going to need to line up the parade. It saves us from having to do everything at absolutely the last minute."

Pre-registration is encouraged by calling Barbara Lucier at 372-6135.

If there is no answer, participants are asked to leave a message. Special Events

  • Christ Episcopal Church will hold a community Thanksgiving service on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
  • New Haven Church of the Brethren in Twin Oaks will have a free Thanksgiving lunch from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
