Angel Tree program is under way

The Angel Tree Program will be placing ‘angels' in stores beginning
on Nov. 1. The ‘angels' are decorative pictures of angels,
representing a child in the county in need of Christmas gifts, with
information about that child on the back.
Children are enrolled in the program through social service and
mental health referrals and by parent requests.
The angels will be available at Hardees, Burger King, Food Lion and
Lowes Foods.
The program was in the past operated by Cora Neville; however, it now
has fallen under the auspices of New Direction Youth Ministry and
Pastor Pam Caudill.
Caudill said the angel cards give clothing and shoe sizes, as well as
toy and other gift suggestions.
In addition to the angel cards, Caudill said that those who would
like to make tax-deductible donations to the effort may do so, as
well as those who would like to donate new or like-new toys without
specifically choosing an angel card.
"We often need more toys and gifts than we receive from the angel
trees," said Caudill. "We use the cash donations and the toys to
supplement our effort and make sure that every child has a wonderful
Christmas."
Donations of gift boxes, bags, paper tape, ribbons and other gift-
wrapping supplies are also needed.
Volunteers are welcome to join the effort to help organize, wrap
gifts, collect donations and distribute gifts to the children.
Angel donations will be accepted on Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
at the Emerson Black Exhibition Building in the Alleghany Fairgrounds
on U.S. 21 just north of Sparta's town limits. Those who take angels
are asked to bring in the gifts on that day or drop them off at
Alleghany Memorial Hospital, where gift deposit boxes will be placed.
Anyone in need of making special arrangements for dropping off gifts
or making donations may call Caudill directly.
Gifts will be distributed on Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the
Emerson Black Exhibition Building.
For more information, call Caudill at (336) 902-8148 or Carol Choate
at 372-6164.
