Roy Orbison Hillbilly show (101K) HILLBILLY FUN—Attendance was up at this year's Hillbilly Show, organizers noted, at least in part due to new acts. One of the new acts was Roy Orbison, (above) with a few of his "Pretty Women." At left is 'soldier boy' Mike Parlier being crooned to.

Attendance is up for Hillbilly Show, organizer says

Attendance at the annual Hillbilly Comedy and Variety Show held Oct. 20 exceeded that of last year's, according to Organizer Agnes Joines with the Alleghany Planning Committee.

"We had about 800 this year, with an additional 110 volunteers and performers," she said. "The attendance is attributed to the advertising and the full support of the county and town citizens." Addressing the Legends theme, Joines said, "I think people were interested in learning who would be performing as the legends billed in the show. Although the show was a little long, we held the attention of the audience and very few people left." Soldier boy hillbilly (152K)

Making note of the night's comedy, Joines added, "Comedy this year was beyond expectations. We had a very vocal audience at all times; everyone was received well. All the feedback has been positive." Joines stated she would like to thank all of the individuals who played a part in this show, and express a special thanks to George Sheets, Gary Halsey with the Sparta Garden Center, and Sonia and Bill Joines. Sheets was in charge of the PA system, Halsey provided decorations for the evening and the Joineses have been emceeing the show for several years.

"Volunteers of all sorts is what made this year's show successful," she commented. "We couldn't have a show without them."

The annual show serves a fund-raiser for the planning committee, and this year, Joines estimates that the show brought in between $3,000 and $3,500 before goods were sold. The monies given to the committee are, in turn, donated to other worthwhile causes including the Solid Rock Food Closet, scholarships for high school students, and paying for four Alleghany students to attend Special Olympics. As the seasons change, some of the money will go toward the purchase of heating fuel for those who may need it but cannot otherwise afford it. Meanwhile, the proceeds from that evening's drink and food sales are going toward programs at the Family Resource Center. Videos (VHS and DVD) of the show can be purchased from Joines for $12 each and the copies are expected to be ready for pickup within two weeks. Individuals interested in purchasing copies may call Joines at 372-4591.
