A Sparta woman remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after the pickup truck in which she was a passenger struck a tractor-trailer and a set of gas pumps at Betty's Dollar Mart on Main Street in Sparta on Monday at 11:09 a.m., according to a report filed by Sgt. Ricky Royal of the Sparta Police Department.

Effie Moore Shinault, 63, was listed in serious condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was first transported to Alleghany Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Winston, the report states.

The driver of the 1976 Chevrolet truck in which she was a passenger, William Edward Shinault, 65, was treated and released at Alleghany Memorial.

According to the report, Mr. Shinault was attempting to exit the parking lot at the gas station and collided with the trailer of the tractor-trailer, a 1998 Volvo driven by Edward Louis Perez of Flintstone, Ga. The report said the tractor-trailer was heading south on Main Street, near the intersection with Trojan Avenue.

According to Royal, the pickup collided with the trailer just in front of the back wheels on the right side.
