Tom Doughton, a former commissioner, dies

Claude Thomas "Tom" Doughton Jr., a former Alleghany County Commiss-
ioner, died Oct. 3 at the age of 67.
The Waynesville resident died after brief battle with pancreatic
cancer. Mr. Doughton was born in Alleghany County Jan. 7, 1940 to the
late Claude Thomas Doughton Sr. and Pauline Turner Doughton.
He was an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Sparta High School, where he
was an athlete in football, basketball and baseball. Doughton spent
his youth in Wilkesboro and Sparta.
He attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and also received
his degree in applied mathematics from N.C. State University. He
worked for Phillip Morris Company, primarily in South America, and
served as vice president of Dr. Grabow Pipes in Sparta.
