Kathy Murphy, a former employee of the Alleghany County School
System, was recently named the new county planner. Her first day of
work was Sept. 4.
The position of county planner and recreational director was
previously held by Amy Pardue, who accepted a position as the 4-H
agent with the Alleghany County Cooperative Extension Service.
To her new job, Murphy brings experience gained from three years of
service as a map draftsman cartographer in the Army, 15 years in the
Army reserves as a motor transport operator and more than 18 years of
service with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as an
engineering design drafter and construction inspector.
After receiving an associate of applied science degree in mechanical
technology with a major in drafting and design and a minor in civil
engineering from Wytheville Community College, Murphy worked for nine
months in Richmond, Va. focusing on location and road design. From
there, she worked with the department in Salem, Va.
