Middle School talks continue

The Alleghany County Board of Education and the Alleghany County
Commission agreed to continue discussion of possibilities of a
potential middle school at a joint meeting Monday evening.
In previous joint meetings, the commission had alluded to the
possibility of assisting the schools through new tax revenue
possibilities, including a deed tax that has been approved by the
state. While that tax would require a referendum to become a reality,
the commissioners have also discussed using any money from such a tax
to help fund safety needs, including the needs of the fire
department, rescue squad and sheriff's department.
Another source of revenue, Medicaid reimbursements, have been set
aside in discussions by the commission to pay down the county's debt
burden. A final decision regarding the use of the funds and the
potential tax revenue has not been made.
