The 2007 Tar Wars National Poster Contest winners did not just include a North Carolinian; one of Alleghany County's very own was among the country's leaders.

Emily Osborne, a Roaring Gap resident and rising fifth-grader at Sparta Elementary School, was named national fourth place runner-up at an awards ceremony held July 16 in Washington, D.C.

"I thought it did maybe top 10," Osborne said of her poster, "I was surprised when I got fourth (place)."

Her art teacher at Sparta School, Kathi Vaughn, said she felt that Osborne's poster would earn high honors in the contest.

"I just had this feeling she was going to do well," Vaughn said, "then sure enough I looked on the computer the next morning and she had won fourth place."

Osborne captured first place in the statewide poster contest held earlier this year to earn the right to represent North Carolina in the national competition.

All state winners and their families were invited to attend the annual Tar Wars National Conference in Washington, which concludes with an awards ceremony, during which the national winners are announced. The first place victor, along with three runners-up, six honorable mentions and the state winners were all recognized at the event.
