One of three incumbents files for Town Council; filing ends Friday noon

As of Tuesday afternoon, only one person-incumbent Mayor Pro Tem Agnes Joines-had filed for election to three seats coming open on the Sparta Town Council.

The filing period for those wishing to seek a seat on the Council will end Friday at noon. Elections for seats on the five seat council rotate and are held every two years. The terms for the five council members and the mayor are four years.

Seats up for election this term are those currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Agnes Joines, Councilman Robert Andrews and Councilwoman Lois Sheets. Andrews was first elected in 1999 and has served two terms on council, Sheets was first elected in 2003 and has served on term on council and Joines was elected in 1995 and has served three consecutive terms on council.

As of Tuesday afternoon, only Joines had filed for re-election. No other filings had been made as of 1 p.m.

The Alleghany Board of Elections handles the town's elections and will be open today (Thursday) from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The office is located on the bottom floor of the new County Administration Building at 348 S. Main St. The office is most easily accessed via the rear parking lot on Jones Street. The office also will be open for filing from Friday at 8 a.m. until the noon deadline.

Each person on the town council is paid $125 per month salary, regardless of the number of meetings attended.

Anyone running for office is required to live within the town's limits and either be registered to vote or be eligible to be registered. The filing fee for council is $5.
