Fiddlers to arrive this week

Pickers and fans of bluegrass and old time music will gather in Sparta this Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21, for the 13th annual Alleghany County Fiddler's Convention.

It will be held at the Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds on U.S. 21 just north of the city limits. Competition will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday, with a band playoff slated for Saturday night.

This year's convention will open with special entertainment around 5:30 p.m. Friday featuring Big Country Bluegrass, said Trever Nichols of the Sparta-Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department, sponsors.

"We'll also have cloggers back this year for special entertainment throughout the convention," he said.

Campers began arriving at the fairgrounds early in the week as the fire department prepared the fairgrounds for campers and the official opening of the gate at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Competition for all categories-junior and senior bands and individuals -will be held Friday night and then will resume Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

Dance competition will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday for adult, junior and children's categories.

The Saturday night show is a band playoff, which always draws a big crowd, Nichols said. At 7:30 p.m., the top 15 bluegrass and top 15 old time bands, as judged in Friday night and Saturday competition, will return for championship playoffs.

Winners share $2,850 in cash prizes and will receive ribbons. Emcees are Sonia Joines and Harold Mitchell. Vendors will offer food and other items.
