Alleghany County Schools Superintendent Jeff Cox made the members of the school board aware that the school system has been approved for a $2 million Qualified Zone Academy Bond (QZAB) funds during its July 10 meeting.

While the board was discussing air conditioning bids for the kitchens and cafeterias at Alleghany High and Glade Creek, Cox made mention of the grant funds. He noted the work behind securing the bids was done by Maintenance Director Mike Edwards.

"As you recall, we had the cafeterias and kitchens at Glade Creek and Alleghany High School were two areas when we did the initial air conditioning completion that we left those two areas out thinking we might not do those," Cox said. "We'd had the chance to talk more and decided maybe we would like to go ahead and include the cafeterias and kitchens."

According to the information provided to Cox by Edwards, two companies, Associated and Stanley, had placed bids on the cafeteria and kitchen at AHS and cafeteria, kitchen and change-out units at Glade Creek. Cox pointed out the change-out units are "on their last legs," thus needing to be replaced.

At the high school, Associated bid $29,480 for the cafeteria and $21,780 for the kitchen, for a combined total of $51,260. Meanwhile, Stanley bid $30,550 for the cafeteria and $21,930 for the kitchen, for a combined total of $52,480.

At Glade, Associated bid $30,110 for the cafeteria and $14,600 for the kitchen, for a combined total at $44,710. Meanwhile, Stanley bid $23,100 for the cafeteria and $15,700 for the kitchen for a combined total of $38,800.
