The filing period will open Friday at noon for those wishing to seek a seat on the Sparta Town Council. Elections for the council are held every two years.
Seats coming up for election this term are those currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Agnes Joines, Councilman Robert Andrews and Councilwoman Lois Sheets. Andrews was first elected in 1999 and has served two terms on council, Sheets was first elected in 2003 and has served on term on council and Joines was elected in 1995 and has served three consecutive terms on council.
Filing for council will close on July 20 at noon.
The Alleghany Board of Elections handles the town's elections and will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at its office location on the bottom floor of the new County Administration Building at 348 S. Main St. The office is most easily accessed via the rear parking lot on Jones Street.
Each person on the town council is paid $125 per month salary, regardless of the number of meetings attended.
Anyone running for office is required to live within the town's limits and either be registered to vote or be eligible to be registered. The filing fee for council is $5.
