Relay for Life exceeds $34,000 goal

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Alleghany County was a success before opening ceremonies began last Friday evening at Woodruff Stadium. Kids Walk (241K)

"We reached our goal of $34,000 before the relay began, and that doesn't happen very often," commented Relay For Life of Alleghany Event Chair Kristi Hoke. "As of Monday we had raised over $43,000, and the fund-raising continues until Aug. 31."

In the photo at left, children participate in the kid's walk during the event. The event features teams, which typically raise money and then walk throughout the night on the track surrounding the football field. A total of 21 teams took part. The event had raised a total of $43,000 by Monday, said Event Chair Kristi Hoke in an interview. The goal for the event was $34,000.
