Events set for weekend

Two events are scheduled for this weekend. On Friday, Alleghany Memorial Hospital and the Alleghany Wellness Center will host a "Be Happy, Be Healthy Community Health Fair. On Saturday, a county auction will be held at the basement level of the Blue Ridge Business Development Center, located at 115 Atwood St. in Sparta. Be Happy, Be Healthy

The Be Happy, Be Healthy Community Health Fair is scheduled to be held Friday between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on the lawn and in the solarium of Alleghany Memorial Hospital.

During the three-hour event, live music will be performed and attendants can munch on snacks that range from fruits and vegetables to popcorn and snow cones.

Children who come to the event will be given the opportunity to visit a firehouse mobile unit, where they will learn more about fire safety. Also on tap for children is the opportunity to have train rides, hear storytelling and watch magic shows. A climbing wall and face painting are also on tap.

Weather permitting, Air Care is slated to be on site, allowing children the opportunity to sit and see the controls. An ambulance, fire truck, and a Highway Patrol golf cart are scheduled to be on site as well.

The event offers informational services including car seat training, tobacco education/dental education, skin screenings/sun safety, and free sports physicals. Free Vial for Life and free blood pressure checks, free food and nutrition analysis, and the opportunity to learn about Wellness Center tours, day passes or membership, will also be available.

For the exception of charges involving lab services, the event is free to the public.

AMH Chief Executive Officer Ralph Castillo said the event will be "bigger and better than last year." He added, "We're inviting everybody to attend and have a good afternoon."

County Auction

Vehicles and equipment declared surplus by the county is slated to be auctioned off Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. at Blue Ridge Business Development Center/Wilkes Community College.

The sale, conducted for the county and the Alleghany Sheriff's Office, will be conducted by Tom Atwood and Allen Reinhardt and will be held rain or shine.

Vehicles for sale include Chevrolets, Dodges, and Fords. Other items slated for sale include, but are not limited to, cargo trailers, rifles and other guns, office items, a PA system, window AC units, computers and computer equipment, various hand tools and power tools and household items.

Individuals who plan to bid on a firearm are asked to bring a permit to purchase a firearm from their county of residence signed by a sheriff's official from that county, and a photo copy of a valid driver's license or photo identification.

Speaking of the event, Reinhardt commented the auction will be "a tremendous opportunity for citizens to purchase items at a good price."

Upcoming Events

Upcoming events in the county include a horse show, the annual Fourth of July parade, a street dance and the annual fireworks display.

The Open Youth Horse Show will be held at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30. On Friday, the gates will open at 5 p.m., with registration beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the show to begin at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the gates to the fairgrounds will open at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 9:30 and the show at 10:30 a.m. While individuals competing will be charged to participate, spectators are admitted free of charge. The event is co-sponsored by Alleghany 4-H, Young Riders 4-H Club and Horse Whispers 4-H Club. The annual Fourth of July parade will be held June 30, the Saturday prior to the holiday, at 2 p.m. The theme of this year's parade is

"Music is Our Heritage," and it will host members of the Crouse House Pickers as its grand marshals. The parade—sponsored by the Sparta Revitalization Committee—will take its traditional route, staging in the parking lot behind the auditorium at Sparta Elementary School, traveling down Main Street, and ending in the Trojan Village Shopping Center.

A Beach Bash Street Dance will be held June 30 on Main Street in Sparta beginning at 4 p.m. Live music will be performed by Mixed Emotions. The Mountain Top Cruisers will have classic cars on display during the event and food will be available as well. On July 4, a tailgating event will be held at Alleghany High School, beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will conclude with a fireworks display at dusk, sponsored by Alleghany County and the Town of Sparta.
