Although the Town taxes will not be increased this fiscal year, beginning July 1 and ending June 30, 2008, according to Sparta Town Manager Bryan Edwards, the proposed budget of $2,002,731 shows a $27,325 increase over the current budget of $1,975,406. Breaking down the proposal, Edwards' recommendation of total general fund revenues is $1,212,136, while recommended water and sewer fund revenues is $790,595.
Proposed general fund revenues listed for the proposed budget include, but are not limited to, current and prior taxes, motor vehicle taxes, a Powell bill allocation, accident reports, parking violations, cemetery revenues and interest, lease of Blue Ridge
Electric and the Chamber building and garbage collection. General fund expenditures include $281,634 in administration expenditures, $437,336 in police expenditures, and $493,166 in general fund expenditures ranging from street signs and sidewalks to a contingency fund and economic development.
Proposed water and sewer fund revenues totaled $490,045 for water and
$300,550 for sewer. Total water expenditures, $412,423, range from
state and county taxes to supplies and water deposit refunds. Total
sewer expenditures, $378,172 range from repair sewer equipment and
chemicals to sewer training and professional services.
