Tractor fire claims life in Ennice

A tragic accident Friday evening in Ennice claimed the life of a life-long farmer.

Eva "Sue" Wagoner, 64, died on Saturday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center from injuries sustained in the accident. According to law enforcement reports, Wagoner was lifting a large round hay bale at her farm on Wagoner Ridge Road Friday evening when the bale rolled off the tractor's forks and against the cab.

The hot exhaust of the tractor's stack ignited the hay, which in turn ignited the tractor's safety shields.

The bale also had blocked the doors to the tractor, making them difficult to open from inside the cab.

James Halsey, who lives near Ms. Wagoner's home, was driving by when he saw the burning tractor. Mr. Halsey and Capt. Carlton Edwards of the Alleghany Sheriff's Office pulled open the door to the tractor and freed Ms. Wagoner, who suffered serious burns.

After being transported to a landing site at Glade Creek School, she was then airlifted by helicopter to N.C. Baptist, where she died Saturday from her injuries.

Ms. Wagoner was well known for her farming abilities and her love of NASCAR racing, especially driver Bill Elliott.

A complete obituary for Ms. Wagoner appears on Page 9A of this week's edition.
