Three former pupils and two former teachers of Whitehead School reunited for a short time last month, when they were given the opportunity to reminisce about the school that served the Whitehead community from 1914 to 1956.
The school served first through seventh grade students, with the first through third grades in one room and the fourth through seventh grades in another.
Reunited after a number of years were former teachers 93-year-old Evelyn Truitt and 99-year-old Bina Poole and former students Elvira Crouse, Earlene Miles and Wiley P. "Junior" Maxwell.
When asked about their years at Whitehead, Poole and Truitt remember "good-sized" classes—consisting of about 25 students—little to no discipline problems, wood stoves and outhouses.
Addressing the teachers' former students, it was noted by Crouse that
she and Maxwell are Poole's only surviving students, while Miles is a
former student of Truitt's.
