County Manager Don Adams presented the Alleghany County Commission with a proposed 2007-2008 budget Monday night totaling $14,545,585.
The Blue Ridge Sports Car Hillclimb will not return to Alleghany in August, ending an annual event that began here in 2003.
Correction
Due to an error, the names of two of the Alleghany High School Top 20
students were omitted from a photo caption on the front page of the
2007 Graduation section published on May 24. Not present for the
photo, but still in the Top 20, were Meagan Jolly and Drew Elliott.
The newspaper regrets the omission.
• Due to an error, it was incorrectly listed Leslie Clark is a resident
of Virginia. She actually is a former resident of Virginia who now
lives in Alleghany County.

The North Carolina Press Association has announced that Candice Groce, graphic artist for The Alleghany News, is the winner of two press awards in Community Division B of the 2007 Best Ad Contest in statewide competition.

Three former pupils and two former teachers of Whitehead School reunited for a short time last month, when they were given the opportunity to reminisce about the school that served the Whitehead community from 1914 to 1956.
John Farrelly, who most recently served as the director of special programs in the central office of Alleghany County Schools, was named the assistant superintendent May 29.
The Alleghany Arts and Crafts Gallery is hosting demonstrations every Saturday throughout the month of June from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
