Special events planned for June

The county's 49th annual June Jamboree is slated to kick off this weekend with a street dance Saturday on Main Street and continue through July 4, when the event ends with a fireworks display and annual tailgate party at Alleghany High School.

According to information from the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce, the events are subject to change. For more information about any particular event, call the Chamber at 372-5473 or the event's sponsor.

The annual event will begin this Saturday at 4 p.m. in downtown Sparta with a cruise in and sock hop. Members of the Mountain Top Cruisers will have classic cars on display and food and other vendors will be on hand.

The following day, May 27, members of the community are welcomed to a Memorial Day observance held by members of the Bruce Wayne Osborne Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7034 at 1 p.m. in front of the courthouse. The annual event will include a ceremony and a 21-gun salute.

Also planned at 1 p.m. on Sunday is an antique tractor adventure gathering at the fairgrounds and touring parts of Alleghany. The adventure will tour from the fairgrounds around the Sparta Parkway (U.S. 21 bypass), up Grandview Drive to Rifle Range Road. The tour will then go through the Whitehead community on N.C. 18 to Pine Swamp Road, then up to Glade Valley Road and back to the fairgrounds. For more information, contact Richard Nichols at 657-1989. Between June 5 and June 9, tours of area businesses will be held. June 5, tour of Joe Edwards' Tree Farm; June 6, Bottomley Dairy Farm; June 7, Bittersweet Cattle Farm; June 8, Chateau Laurinda; and June 9, Peaceful Valley Trout Farm. The tours will be held from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., with transportation provided at the Alleghany County Administration Building located at 348 S. Main St.

Meanwhile, a flower design seminar is set for 2 p.m. June 6 at Scott's Landscaping and Nursery. The business can be reached at 372-1626.

On June 10, a Family Fun Day will be held in the Trojan Village Shopping Center from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The event will feature live music, games, rides, food, skateboard demonstrations and more. Every Friday in June, free watermelon will be offered at Trojan Village Shopping Center from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. In addition, flea markets and sidewalk sales will be held every Saturday, with free setup. Live gospel music will be featured on Sundays at the Trojan Village gazebo from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

On June 16, a lawnmower race will be held at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults, children eight and under are admitted free. Also on June 16, an All-American Street Dance will take place at Trojan Village Shopping Center beginning at 7:30 p.m. The event will include live music, including youth bluegrass, southern rock and country. A health fair will be held in the Trojan Village Shopping Center on June 20 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Several businesses and nonprofit organizations, including the North Carolina Partnership Against Drugs, the Alleghany Rescue Squad and many others will be represented.

Parade

This year's July 4 parade will be held June 30, the Saturday prior to the holiday, at 2 p.m.
