Blue Ridge Mountain Fair returns to Sparta

The Blue Ridge Mountain Fair is returning to Crouse Park in Sparta this July, and organizers are taking applications now from groups and individuals who want to sell arts, crafts and food.

"We are looking for local vendors," said John Brady, committee chair for the Alleghany Arts and Crafts Co-op. Organizers hope to involve local churches, civic groups, craftspeople, artisans and others in the two-day event, he said.

It's slated for Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28. Vendor spaces are $50 each for both days.

Hours will be 3 p.m. "until" on Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Arts and craft vendors, food and live music will be featured. Admission is free.

The Blue Ridge Mountain Fair was held in Crouse Park and the county fairgrounds for many years until the 1990s.

The Alleghany Arts and Crafts Co-op is an organization that has formed since that time to promote the talents and trades of people in the county. The group recently decided to revive the fair and hold it in the park.

"We just wanted to give people something to do, and try to bring some visitors to town. We've always thought the festival in the park was a great place," Brady said.

The Alleghany Arts Council is also sponsoring the event, along with others, he said.
