The members of the Alleghany County Board of Education voted 4-1 to accept the school assignment policy, with the provision that before and after school programs be in place at all three elementary schools.
The lone dissenting vote was cast by board member Mitch Franklin, who earlier had made a motion to accept the attendance policy as presented and change the resolution to state all kindergarten students attend school in the district in which they live starting with the 2007-08 school year with the provision before and after school programs are implemented at the K-8 schools. Franklin's motion did not receive a second.
Currently, Piney Creek and Sparta schools have before and after school programs, but Glade Creek does not.
The resolution noted that, beginning the 2007-08 school year,
students in kindergarten through third grade will be assigned to the
school in the district in which they live. Meanwhile, students in
fourth through eighth grades who were allowed to attend a school out
of their district during the 2006-07 school year will be allowed to
continue their attendance at the school in which they are currently
enrolled.
