Numerous services and events are planned for Easter
Numerous events, including church services, religious observances,
special meals and other community events are planned in recognition
of the Easter holiday, which celebrates the Christian belief in the
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
A Sparta Spring Festival and egg hunt, which will be held Saturday
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Crouse Park, is in support of the Solid Rock
Food Closet. It is requested that participants in the egg hunt donate
canned goods to the ministry. The festival also includes pony rides
and face painting.
Meanwhile, a number of churches will be holding special services for
the holiday.
Church Services
Editor's Note: The following churches submitted information to The
Alleghany News by April 2. The churches are listed in alphabetical
order.
Beech Grove Baptist Church in Baywood, Va. will have Easter sunrise
service at 7 a.m. The church choir will present the musical "Then
Came Morning" at 10:30 a.m.;
Bellview Baptist Church will have Easter sunrise service at 7 a.m.
in the Cranberry cemetery with breakfast in the church fellowship
hall to follow. Sunday school will be held at 9 a.m. and worship
services will be held at 10 a.m.;
Calvary Baptist Church in Glendale Springs will hold Easter sunrise
service at 7 a.m., with breakfast to follow in the fellowship hall.

Chestnut Grove Baptist Church will hold its Easter sunrise service
at 7 a.m. with breakfast to follow in the church fellowship hall.
Worship services will be held at 10:30 a.m.;
First United Methodist of Independence in Independence, Va. will
hold Easter sunrise service at 7:30 a.m., followed by a fellowship
breakfast provided by the Methodist Men;
Laurel Springs Baptist Church will hold an Easter sunrise service
at 8 a.m. in the church cemetery with breakfast to follow. While no
Sunday school will be held, worship services will be held at 9:45 a.m.;
Little Pine Liberty Baptist Church will hold Easter sunrise service
at 6:30 a.m., with breakfast to follow in the church fellowship hall.
No night services will be held;
Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Glade Valley will hold
Easter sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. with breakfast to follow in the
church fellowship hall. Sunday school will be held at 8:30 a.m. and
no worship services are scheduled;
Mount Carmel Union Baptist Church in the Turkey Knob community will
hold Easter sunrise service at 7 a.m., with a ham biscuit breakfast,
as well as Sunday school, to follow the services;
New Covenant Church will hold a "Sonrise" service at 6:30 a.m.,
with a breakfast to follow at the church. Regular services will be
held at 10 a.m.;
Old Saddle Mountain Church will hold its Easter sunrise service at
6:30 a.m., with breakfast to follow. Sunday school will be held at 8
a.m., with worship services scheduled for 9 a.m.
Osborne Memorial Baptist Church will have Easter sunrise service at
7 a.m., breakfast to be served at 8:30 a.m., Sunday school to be held
at 10 a.m. and worship services to be held at 11 a.m.;
Pine Fork Baptist Church will hold an Easter service at 7 a.m.,
with Sunday school at 9 a.m. and worship at 10 a.m.;
Saddle Mountain Church in Ennice will have Easter sunrise service
at 7 a.m. at Fox Hunter's Paradise on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Sunday
school will be held at 9 a.m. at the church, with a worship service
at 10 a.m.;
Scottsville Baptist Church will hold an Easter sunrise service at 7
a.m., with breakfast to follow the service. Sunday school will be
held at 9:30 a.m. and worship service will be held at 10:30 a.m.; and
Whitehead Union Baptist Church will have Easter sunrise service at
6:30 a.m.
Other Events
The Alleghany County Ministerium will be having a Maundy Thursday
service at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Sparta and a Good
Friday service at 7 p.m. at Sparta United Methodist Church. A sunrise
service is scheduled at 7 a.m. at the Mahogany Rock Overlook at Mile
Marker 235 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In case of rain, the sunrise
service will be held at Sparta Presbyterian Church at 7 a.m.; and
Christ Episcopal Church will hold a Maundy Thursday service at 7:30
p.m., consisting of the holy Eucharist, foot washing and stripping of
the altar. The Good Friday service will be held at 7:30 p.m. with
meditation on each of the last seven words of Jesus from the cross.
Sunday, the church will hold its Easter service at 10:30 a.m. and is
scheduled to include a festival Eucharist with special music and
distribution of bread blessing.
Government Office Closings
Alleghany County offices and Sparta Town offices will be closed
Friday for Easter;
Alleghany County Schools will be closed Friday for Easter and April
9 through 13 for spring break.
