An improvised store at a private residence on old N.C. 18 in Wilkesboro, completely stocked with stolen merchandise, was discovered as part of an investigation that began in Alleghany County. Det. Tim Duncan said Monday evening that the two-story building was at a home owned by 36-year-old Jeremy Lee Ebersole of Squirrel Lane in North Wilkesboro, whom Duncan charged with breaking into Mabe's Grocery and Whitehead Store. Also charged was Christopher David Moore, 33, of old N.C. 18 in Wilkesboro.
According to Duncan, the two were involved in breaking and entering cases in numerous counties, mostly targeting retail establishments such as feed and tack stores, convenience stores and general stores. The case began to take shape when Ebersole was caught inside Mabe's Grocery by Deputy Steve Carrier and Sparta Policeman Glwyn Sawyer.
"From there we brought him back to the jail and we knew he had
someone in a vehicle somewhere because there wasn't anyone around and
there was no vehicle outside the store," said Sheriff David Edwards.
