The 40th annual WCOK (1060AM) Alleghany Heart Fund Auction raised $7,889 on its second and final week to end the event with $14,540. That figure was down slightly from last year's total of $15,042, but still higher than the $12,310 raised in 2005. The overall total in 2004 was $14,343.

Auction spokesperson Virginia Setzer said a total of $4,151 was raised from auctioning items while contributions added another $3,738.

"That's a pretty good total for the way the economy has been," said Setzer of this year's result. "Our goal is to do the best we can." The auction item that raised the highest amount was a pottery piece by Mangum Pottery, which sold for $500. The wormy chestnut pie safe made by John Wayne and Carol Edwards was the top seller for the entire auction for the second year in a row, again raising $1,000.

"We had this week a contribution from an individual who asked not to be named for $1,000," said Setzer. "I'm sure you've heard of the song, "Pennies from Heaven," I thought to myself, 'That's dollars from heaven.'"

Setzer said many of the items sold during the auction have been picked up and paid for, but still some remain to be picked up at the Carolina Silk Shop at 24 West Whitehead St. (N.C. 18 south of the intersection with U.S. 21 in downtown Sparta).

Setzer reiterated her appreciation for all those who helped make the auction successful.

"I want to thank all the people for listening, all the people who bid and make donations and the people who come quickly to pay for and pick up their items," said Setzer. "We also need to say thank you many times over to all of our workers who helped both days and the use of the windows at Seasons, WCOK for making this event possible and really just thank everyone who had a hand in making this a success."
