State Champion Wrestlers

The Alleghany High School wrestling team is shown after winning its second straight 1-A state dual wrestling championship. The Trojans beat Topsail 43-22 last Saturday on the Pirates home mat, also marking the second straight year Alleghany defeated Topsail for the title. The Trojans opened the state dual tournament with a 64-12 victory over Robbinsville Feb. 6 at Polk County High School in Columbus, then avenged an earlier loss with a 41-18 win over fellow Northwest Conference member West Wilkes. Alleghany beat South Stokes 59-16 in the western regional finals to advance to the finals.

Jeremiah Hampton pinned three opponents and won a 19-5 major decision over another to be named most outstanding wrestler. The Trojans travel to Hendersonville for the west regional of the individual state tournament on Friday.
