Sparta resident and former Sparta Police Chief George Kelly Vaughn of River View Drive died Sunday morning at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was 65 years old.
Vaughn was born in Pennsylvania in 1941 to Howard and Velma Estep
Vaughn and joined the U.S. Air Force after high school. Vaughn served
from 1960 until 1965, ending with a rank of Airman First (E-4), which
is similar to the rank of sergeant in other branches of the service.
He served during the time of the conflict in Lebanon, the Cuban
missile crisis and the war in VietNam.
