Several items to be sold during the WCOK (1060 AM) Heart Fund Auction were placed on display in the window of Seasons Gifts and Home Decor on South Main Street in Sparta last week.

The display space for the items was donated by business owner Nancy Roten and includes the street level windows on the right-hand side (facing the building) of the former Smithey's building.

Volunteers placed furniture, quilts, collectibles, a birdhouse and other items in the windows of the store, where they may be viewed up until they are sold in the auction.

The auction is scheduled for Feb. 17 and Feb. 24, generally beginning at 9:30 a.m. and continuing throughout the day until 5 p.m. on WCOK. The auction will also be carried (sound only) on Alleghany Cablevision Channel 8.

The annual Heart Fund Auction raises money for the American Heart Association. The local fund-raiser is entering its 40th year here in Alleghany County.

The volunteer leaders of the event again are Virginia Setzer, Rosamond Joines, Cornelia Reeves and radio station Manager Andy Wright. More items are still being sought for the auction, said Setzer. "We always need donations right up through the auction," said Setzer. "But we are always pleased with the number and quality of the donations we receive. We don't frown on anything."

A partial list of some of the earliest items donated includes: a log bird house and a handmade chestnut blanket chest, both from Tom Atwood, a 1921 Silver Dollar from R.G. James, pickle beans and blackberry jelly from Louise Evans, two cakes from Nancy Ridgeway, fried apple pies from Bonnie Vaughan, a round of golf for two from High Meadows Country Club, a round of golf for four at New River Country Club, a handmadewormy chestnut pie safe from John Wayne and Carole Edwards, a "Trumpeting Tulips" quilt by Delta Peterson and the New Haven Quilters, an antique Singer sewing machine from Howard and Jean Jackson, pickled corn from Dorothy Wyatt, applebutter from Bertha McMillan and a Sony TV, complete season videos of "24" and other items from Revis Eller.

Setzer said many other items have been donated since the first list was compiled. More items will be listed in advertisements in the newspaper in upcoming weeks.
