George Vaughn dies at age 65

Sparta resident and former Sparta Police Chief George Kelly Vaughn of River View Drive died Sunday morning at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was 65 years old.

Commissioners enter settlement agreement with Maymead

In an unexpected turn of events Monday night after a closed session, the Alleghany Board of Commissioners announced a settlement agreement with Maymead Materials in regards to a proposed asphalt plant in Laurel Springs.

Dropout rate falls at Alleghany High

Although the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction reports an increase in the high school dropout rate in the state, the number of dropouts in Alleghany has decreased, according to information released Jan. 31 by the department.

School 'report cards' posted

The N.C. School Report Card was released Jan. 30 by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, providing parents, educators and others a "one stop shop" to gain information on how schools and school districts are performing in several measures.
