A meeting slated to help revitalize the Alleghany Farmers Market is planned on Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the County Office Building at 90 S. Main St.
The N.C. Cooperative Extension is organizing the meeting, which will be held in the second-floor conference room (the level accessible via the Main Street entrance).
Agricultural Extension Agent David Isner said anyone who is interested in selling food products at the Farmers Market this year should attend the meeting.
"A steering committee will be formed to address important issues such as location, administration, dates and times, products for sale, safe food handling, liability concerns and other issues," Isner noted. Steering committee members and vendors also will have the opportunity to attend "Profitable Produce," a meeting on food safety and liability issues associated with selling fresh produce. That meeting will be held on Feb. 14 in Winston-Salem with experts discussing the outcomes of recent E. coli disease outbreaks, food handling safety and insurance concerns. Pre-registration is required by Feb. 9 for the meeting and lunch. The cost for each person attending is $15.
