Blevins named director of social services

A native of neighboring Ashe County, John Blevins said he accepted the position of director of the Alleghany County Department of Social Services in order to return to the mountains, where he and wife Amy were raised.

Judge rules in favor of Maymead for asphalt plant

Superior Court Judge John O. Craig III announced last Friday that he has ruled in favor of Maymead Materials Inc. in a lawsuit over the location of an asphalt plant on N.C. 18 at the site of the former Laurel Springs School.

Judge Mitch L. McLean of Wilkesboro has been selected by Chief Justice Sarah Parker of the N.C. Supreme Court as chief district court judge for the 23rd Judicial District, which includes Wilkes.
