Three Alleghany High School seniors were recognized with citizenship awards Dec. 14 from the Alleghany Rotary Club. The youth were presented with savings bonds during a morning meeting at The Pines Restaurant in Sparta.
Rotarian Cecil Brooks recognized two $50 savings bond winners (Jessica Miles and Brian Mabe) and one $100 savings bond winner (Terry Brinegar) for their service to the Alleghany community. The seniors were selected by members of the AHS Scholarship Committee. Terry Brinegar, the son of Lujean Keepfer and Joey Brinegar is a member of Junior Appalachian Musicians, and in that capacity has performed at several local functions and fund-raisers. He also served as a volunteer assistant for the program for two-and-a-half years.
Brinegar also is a charter member and current president of the Junior Friends of the Library, secretary of the Alleghany County 4-H Council, and a member of the National Tech Honor Society. Through 4-H, Brinegar has mentored elementary students at Piney and Sparta through the summer day camp program. The program covered issues including accepting people with disabilities and establishing good health practices.
Brinegar's teachers state he "has the drive necessary to reach his goals and shows concern for making Alleghany County a better place to be."
Jessica Miles, the daughter of Gary and Janie Miles of Glade Valley has volunteered with school blood drives and the Alleghany County Relay for Life, participated in tobacco free initiatives and is an active member of the high school's health promotion club.
"She is a volunteer peer tutor for students who have special needs,
where her patience and concern for others are evident," Brooks said.
