The Toliver cemetery, located on Nile Road in Sparta, is the final resting place of Alleghany native John Toliver, a Revolutionary War soldier. Family, friends and guests are expected to come to the county next weekend to honor the veteran in a couple of ceremonies.
A grave marker dedication is scheduled for Oct. 21 at 1:30 p.m., according to Emma Lee Tolliver, the wife of William Tolliver, the great-great-great grandson of John Toliver. The event will take place in the Toliver cemetery and will be led by Joe Harris, the president of the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, (NCSSAR) the Yadkin County chapter of NCSSAR and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Toliver's ancestors were able to attain a military tombstone for him and purchased a bronze plaque from the Sons of the American Revolution. Mrs. Tolliver noted during the grave marker dedication, "Amazing Grace" will be played on bagpipes.
Prior to the event, an 11 a.m. memorial service will be held in the New River Baptist Church led by Harris.
Through efforts of the late Toliver's family, the site of the family
cemetery, in which nearly 50 stones were found, has recently been
cleaned and fenced, and frames are being built and concrete bases are
being created for the stones.
