A short time after receiving a masters in accounting from Appalachian State University, Alleghany native Katie Myers has returned home after accepting the position of chief financial officer at Alleghany Memorial Hospital. Myers joined the hospital as CFO in May, replacing Ralph Castillo, who had held the position a little more than five years prior to being named the hospital's chief executive officer. Myers began the full-time position May 15.

A 2001 graduate of Alleghany High School, Myers went directly to ASU that fall, and maintained a focus on attaining a bachelors and master's degree within a five-year period.

"I knew I was going to be an accountant since third grade," Myers said. "I went into Appalachian knowing that was what I wanted to do and that's how I got through so quickly. I was on track. I went and talked to my advisers and said I would be out of here in five years with a masters and they looked at me like I was crazy. It was a lot of hard work, but I made it."

Myers received a bachelors in accounting in 2005 and received her master's in May 2006. She noted she has passed a four-part exam that is necessary to become a certified public accountant (CPA). However, the title will not be official until she has a year's worth of experience in the field under her belt.

While at ASU, Myers balanced a studying and working life, as she had in high school. In 2001, as part of a high school internship program, she worked as an intern with hospital accountants. After completion of the internship program, she worked as a summer intern for two years.
