During a called meeting last Tuesday, the members of the Alleghany County Board of Education were given the opportunity to express their thoughts and concerns regarding the potential of a middle school being built in the county. A potential middle school had been the discussion of several meetings in earlier months this year, but due to budget constraints brought on by construction at Sparta School and the bus garage, the discussion of a possible middle school had been put on hold.
Addressing the board, Superintendent Jeff Cox stated it was time to pick the issue of a potential middle school back up and decide where the board is going with overall facilities planning.
"What I want to start thinking about is what sorts of questions do we
have as we're moving forward with this process?" Cox asked. "What
sorts of questions do we need to get answers to as far as how our
parents feel about issues, how the students feel, how the community
at large feels. What are those most critical questions we need to get
answers to give us some direction about how we're moving forward with
our plans?" He then noted the results of the November election will
also play a factor in the middle school discussion in reference to
the makeup of the commission board "and how that puts us in a better
or worse position as far as moving forward with whatever kind of
project we're going to end up moving forward with."
