With a vote of 3-2 in favor, Alleghany High School Interim Principal Paul Crouse was named the high school's new principal following a closed session of the Alleghany County Board of Education. Board members Faron Atwood and Joel Souther voted no. No discussion took place on the matter during open session Sept. 6.
Three board members, Clarence Crouse, Betsy Dillon and Chairman Charles Joines voted in favor of the motion. In a telephone interview Tuesday, Clarence Crouse stated he voted in favor of the motion because he was "supporting the process of the interviews and the recommendation of the superintendent." Joines could not be reached for comment.
Dillon said, "Mike Edwards and Paul Crouse are both extremely qualified and we're lucky to have them in our system. Both would be excellent as a high school principal. I have equal respect and admiration for both of the local candidates."
Both Atwood and Souther noted in later interviews that their negative
votes in the decision were not a reflection on Crouse and by no means
served as a vote against him personally.
