A 36-year-old Alleghany County woman was found dead in an apartment in Pilot Mountain last Thursday, Aug. 24 in what is being investigated as a suspicious death. Dawn Michelle Thompson was found dead just after 4 p.m. inside the residence on Shoals Road in Pilot Mountain, said Graham Atkinson of the Surry County Sheriff's Department. Thompson, who is from Sparta and has family here, had been working as a caregiver in the home of Clayton and Barbara Hanes. Thompson provided care for Barbara Hanes, who is disabled. The couple found her body and then contacted the sheriff's department.
The State Bureau of Investigation also aided on the scene.
Ms. Thompson's body showed signs of an assault prior to her death,
said Atkinson.
