The annual fall CarQuest Mow Down, sponsored by the Alleghany Fair Committee, drew a total of 2,500 said fair committee member April Choate. The race is a points race in the Alleghany Mower Racing Association's Alleghany Chevrolet Racing Series.
"We were really pleased with the turnout," said Choate. "We are thankful for the wonderful weather during the fair—at least after the derby."
The Alleghany County Agricultrual Fair wrapped up with the mower race
on Saturday, but the Demolition Derby which was postponed due to rain
on Aug. 19, is now scheduled for Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. Those who have
ticket stubs will be admitted free.
Other fair events during the week included kids night on Thursday, nightly livestock shows, exhibits and midway rides.
Thursday night's attendance is being estimated at nearly 1,200 people, said Choate. "That's about the same as last year," she said.
"We've held pretty steady on kids night for the past three years."
She noted that the special activities sponsored by the Partnership
for Children are always a big hit, as are the fair's petting zoo and
other attractions.
