Sparta Presbyterian Church celebrates 100 year anniversary

This month, Sparta Presbyterian Church, formerly known as Carson Memorial Presbyterian Church, is celebrating 100 years of service to the Lord.

The church is located on Main Street in Sparta and is currently pastored by the Rev. Thom Burleson. In celebration of the event, the church has been holding special services, which will conclude with the centennial service Aug. 13. Burleson noted a book that highlights the church's history is currently being put together by several members, as is a commemorative cookbook, full of recipes from members past and present.

History of Presbyterianism and the Local Church

According to Burleson, Presbyterianism in the States dates back to 1706 in Philadelphia.

"Considering the connections between American Civil government and the way in which Presbyterian congregations govern themselves, it is not surprising the only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence was the Presbyterian Rev. John Witherspoon," he said. Burleson noted the word ‘Presbyterian' comes from the Greek word ‘Presbuteros,' meaning elder. With the concept of learning from the elder generation in tow, he added, "The church constantly strives for a balance between clergy and lay leadership."

According to the church history, an effort toward Presbyterianism began in the county in 1900, led by the Rev. W.H. Murray of Greensboro. In 1903, Murray asked Alleghany
